DFW wins safety award

The Flight Safety Foundation presented Dallas-Fort Worth International (DFW) with the 2007 Airport Safety Award.

The airport won the award for leadership and achievements benefiting aviation safety not only at the airport but in the greater aviation community as well. Flight Safety Foundation officials praised the airport for taking a leadership role in developing safety initiatives. Those projects have included a perimeter taxiway system, which allows arriving aircraft to taxi to terminals without crossing active runways, and its area navigation program that guides pilots along more direct departure routes.

Both of those programs were developed in partnership with the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). DFW also upgraded its airport surface detection equipment, providing radar surveillance of aircraft and airport service vehicles, which helps controllers prevent runway incursions.

The Flight Safety Foundation has more than 1,140 individual and organizational members in 142 countries and is dedicated to improving aviation safety.
