2 Airports Expand Recycling Efforts

Recycling movements are growing nationwide, but two airports have really stepped up their efforts recently.

Last week, the Kansas City Aviation Department organized a three-day, airportwide effort to support America Recycles Day (Nov. 15) at Kansas City International (MCI). On Nov. 12, volunteers collected old phone books; the next day, it was scrap metal; on the final day, employees handed out coupons from The Paradies Shops and HMSHost Corp. to travelers who were observed using the recycling bins throughout the terminal.

MCI’s program began in 2005 recycling magazines, newspapers, aluminum cans and plastic bottles in the public areas of the terminal buildings. Now the program includes cardboard, office paper, scrap metal, light bulbs, oil, tires, vehicle batteries and Freon, and efforts have been expanded to special events.

At Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX), passengers now can “go green” in the concourses.

The airport’s employees, shops, restaurants and other business partners have long recycled pallets, baled cardboard, green waste (tree trimmings), and metal salvage.

The eighty silver recycling bins with green logos, located throughout the airport’s three terminals post-security, now allow passengers to join the effort.
