STL Begins Baggage Claim System Renovation

Lambert-St. Louis International (STL) has begun to transform its baggage claim system in the main terminal.

All six of the more than 30-year-old carousels will be replaced, as well as two large-claim units. Carousel MT 6 has been shut down and enclosed by a protective wall so the replacement can begin. Passengers should expect to see minimal interruption in service, as only one carousel will be closed at a time.

A new conveyer system that travels between airline baggage tugs and the carousels will also be installed. The project is expected to be finished by June.

The baggage carousel replacements are part of the Airport Experience Program, designed to improve passengers’ time spent at STL. The $5.5M baggage claim project is part of the first phase of renovation projects totaling $16.7M. Also in this phase of renovations are the restoration of the interior ceilings of Lambert’s historic domes in the main terminal, expected to be completed by the spring, and overhauling the airport’s roadway signs to make navigation to and from the terminals, parking garages and other airport-related facilities easier; the signage is expected to be completed by the middle of the year.
