The city of San Diego has honored San Diego International (SAN) as its 2009 Recycler of the Year.
“We are committed to operating San Diego International Airport in a manner that shows the utmost respect for the environment,” says Thella F. Bowens, president and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. “Through a variety of programs, we work to protect natural resources and reduce our carbon footprint in every aspect of the airport’s operations.”
Among the airport’s current recycling initiatives are sponsoring a waste-reduction and recycling workshop; being one of the first major airports to have a formal sustainability policy in 2008; forming a committee to handle recycling issues; and placing custom recycling bins in the terminals for passengers and visitors to use.
It is the third year in a row the airport has won the award, and the fifth time overall.
