The Florida Department of Transportation has named Miami International (MIA) its commercial service airport of the year.
FDOT said the airport is being honored for turning the Capital Improvement Program around, finishing its South Terminal and getting the North Terminal back where it should be. The Miami-Dade Aviation Department was also cited for opening thousands of square feet of new terminal, improving customer service and enhancing the look of the terminal area- all while continuing its ongoing 20% budget reduction plan.
“It has been a challenging year for all airports, but Miami International Airport has not only met the challenge but managed to excel in the face of adversity,” says Aviation Director José© Abreu. “The hard work of Miami-Dade Aviation Department staff, plus the cooperative spirit of our business and federal partners has brought this economically vital facility through in very exigent times.”
The agency also said the airport achieved a zero-discrepancy rating for the 11th straight year during the Federal Aviation Administration’s Part 139 annual airfield inspection, which focuses on safety areas such as runways, taxiways and taxi lanes, airfield striping, signage and lighting, departure and approach surfaces, and other areas.
The airport was given the award Aug. 5 at the 40th annual Florida Airports Council conference at the Loews Hotel on Miami Beach, Fla.
