Benson Brings Barbecue Sauce To AUS

Ray Benson, a Texas music icon, has debuted Ray Benson’s Asleep at the Wheel Bar-B-Q Sauce at Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS).

For each bottle sold of the sauce, which was unveiled Friday, Delaware North Companies will donate $1to the Health Alliance for Austin Musicians.

“Delaware North is very pleased to be a part of a local Austin initiative, whether it is supporting a worthy cause such as HAAM, or helping our buddy Ray get the word out about his new sauce,” says Terry Mahlum, general manager for the company at AUS.

“Even when we’re not in Texas, folks all over this country try to make us feel at home by serving us barbecue,” Benson says. “Whether we’re in Portland, Maine, or Portland, Ore., and everywhere in between, I’ve had it all. Terry suggested I get with Dan Jardine to help me hone in on that distinctive authentic Texas taste, and I think we’ve captured lightning in a bottle.”

The marinade is available in two versions: Roadhouse Original and Spicy.

“I’m putting it on everything: beef, pork, chicken, fries, toast, tamales,” Benson says. “It’s so good that I run the risk of being better known for finger-licking sauce instead of my guitar licks!”

Jardine, a Texas recipe legend, says he is pleased with the new sauce.

“I started a new company in 2001 making up some recipes from myself and a few other companies,” he says. “Ray is one of the most recent to partner up with us. I tried to put my 30 years of preparing Texas cooking sauces and salsas together with Ray’s western swing. Cooking is a fun activity, but this resulting sauce is even sweeter music. What comes through is the flavor of cooking outside over an open fire which adds a good touch whether the cook is working on an outside grill or inside using the sauce as a condiment.”

The sauce is available in limited quantities at Ray Benson’s Roadhouse at AUS and online at www.asleepatthewheel.com.

Nothing brings people together quite like good music and good food,” adds Benson. “I’m just trying to contribute to both.”
