Photographer Brings ‘The River Inside’ To BNA

Travelers going through Nashville International (BNA) will be able to get a first-hand glimpse of life on the Mississippi River.

A new exhibit, “The River Inside,” features 70 photographs by Nashville, Tenn., resident John Guider from a three-month journey down the river, along with a canoe suspended from the ceiling. Part of the art program’s Flying Solo Series, the exhibit is in the C Concourse food court and runes through July 2012.

“By hosting local artists’ work, Nashville International Airport introduces its passengers and public to the culture and feel of Nashville and Middle Tennessee,” says Raul Regalado, president and CEO of the Metropolitan Nashville Airport Authority. “The Arts at the Airport program is one way we continue to provide excellent service to our passengers, strategic partners and employees, known as the Nashville Airports Experience.”

For his adventure, Guider bought a canoe and went on a solitary, artistic journey that led him from the creek behind his farmhouse to the Harpeth, Cumberland, Ohio and Mississippi rivers until he reached New Orleans. Once finished, the commercial photographer examined his more than 2,000 images and began to put his experiences on paper.

It took him a year to learn the discipline of the platinum print process and to write about his time on the river.
