Fitness Trail Aims To Help PHX Travelers Get In Shape Between Flights

Travelers at Phoenix Sky Harbor International (PHX) now have a way to get some exercise while waiting for their flight.

The airport has opened a post-security fitness walking trail that goes around Terminal 4. And to keep hydrated, walkers can fill their own water bottles with chilled, filtered water at any of seven free bottle-filling stations near the entrances to all of the Terminal 4 concourses.

The trail goes from the top of the A gates to the bottom of the D Concourse, with views of the mountains, parks and man-made wonders. Highlights include Piestewa Peak, named for Lori Piestewa, a member of the Hopi tribe and the first Native American woman to die in combat serving with the U.S. military; Camelback Mountain, a prominent Phoenix-area landmark; the PHX Sky Train Bridge, the world’s largest mass-transit bridge over an active taxiway at a major airport; and South Mountain Park/Preserve, which is, at 16,000 acres, the largest municipal park in the country. A new brochure, PHX Fitness Trail, offers a map, points of interest, mileage and photos; they are available at the Terminal 4 information counters or at skyharbor.com/fitphx.

Walkers will have to bring their carry-on baggage with them, as there is no carry-on storage because of security reasons.

The Sky Harbor Fitness Trail complements the city of Phoenix FitPHX initiative, a program designed to get the city’s residents into better shape.
