Lotte Duty Free, GUM Unveil $20 Million Enhancement

Lotte Duty Free unveiled its new retail offerings at Guam’s Antonio B. Won Pat International (GUM) during a grand-opening ceremony this week.

Gov. Eddie Baza Calvo; Charles H. Ada II, the airport’s executive manager; and Lotte Duty Free CEO Hong-Kyun Lee led a group of dignitaries in a ribbon cutting ceremony that celebrated the opening.

As part of the $20 million refurbishment, the company and airport worked together to create a sense of place. That was highlighted by a life-sized model of Guam’s native water-buffalo, the Carabao, located just past security checkpoints. The design also includes Latte stone features leading into the Chamorro Hut entrance of the Guam Cultural Center, which has a 4,500-gallon aquarium full of fish as a centerpiece.

The overall project encompassed 24,000 square feet of retail, a refurbished food court, and the renovation of restrooms and other facilities.

Lotte Duty Free, along with design consultant Lightfoot Space, Guam-based Architects TRMA and Contractor Black Construction created the duty-free concession called Guam Gateway. New offerings include a semi-walk-through format that added additional space for core categories of perfumes and cosmetics, liquor, tobacco and food. Lotte also opened nine new stores: Bally, Bulgari, Burberry, Chloe, Coach, Loewe, Salvatore Ferragamo, Tumi and Tory Burch, the latter of which is a first for GUM and just the third airport opening worldwide. Several new perfume, cosmetic and liquor brands were added, as well.

“This is a very proud day for Lotte Duty Free, for everyone involved in helping us deliver on our vision and, most importantly, for the island of Guam,” Lee says. “The retail offering we have unveiled today stands alongside any airport in the world as an exceptional shopping experience.”
