SAN Celebrates Local, Small Business Participation

As construction on its rental car center approaches its halfway point, San Diego International (SAN) is celebrating substantial participation in those efforts by local and small businesses.

Local businesses have won construction contracts totaling $155 million. Small businesses have won $60 million in work.

Airport officials held a briefing session for local and small businesses to provide them with information about the $316 million project and then tailored bid opportunities and package sizes in order to facilitate participation.

“We are pleased that a large percentage of the rental car center work has been awarded to local and small businesses,” says Thella Bowens, president and CEO of SAN. “The airport places a high value on inclusion and works hard to make sure that our contracting opportunities allow local and small businesses to be competitive.”

During its Green Build program, the largest in the airport’s history, more than $415 million in contracts were awarded to local businesses, and $118 million went to small companies. Several additional opportunities will be coming up at SAN in the years to come, airport officials say.
