Study: Miami International’s Impact On Jobs, Business Revenues Grows

Miami International (MIA) and four general aviation airports in Miami-Dade County support 282,000 direct and indirect jobs and $33.7 billion in business revenues, an increase of 4,600 jobs and $200 million over the previous year, according to a study conducted by transportation analyst Martin Associates.

About 38,000 private and public sector employees work onsite at MIA alone, with wages exceeding $1.7 billion.

“Simply put, the Miami-Dade Aviation Department continues to deliver for our community,” says County Mayor Carlos A. Gimenez. “MIA and the general aviation airports are a force for good, supporting jobs, trade, tourism and consumer spending across the country.”

According to the study, the airport’s growth in 2014 was spurred by the addition of eight air carriers projected to bring 6,800 direct and indirect jobs to the community and generate more than $830 million in business revenues if they sustain operations for one full year at MIA.

“MIA has long been known as the top economic engine for Miami-Dade County, and this study puts that unofficial title in clear context,” says Aviation Director Emilio T. Gonzalez. “We aren’t just in the business of connecting our community to the world. We’re in the business of supporting hundreds of thousands of local jobs, billions of dollars in world purchases and tens of billions of dollars in business revenues across a variety of industries. We’re determined to continue on this upward path and to support the community that supports us.”
