The Tucson Airport Authority Board of Directors has approved a multi-phase terminal improvement project for Tucson International (TUS) that includes expanding security checkpoints areas, opening more concessions post-security and improving infrastructure.
“This project provides us with the opportunity to enhance the customer experience through improved space utilization,” says Bonnie Allin, president and CEO of TAA. “The larger security checkpoint allows for newer security technology and better passenger flow. The improved concessions will provide a greater variety of food and retail opportunities. This is going to take our airport to another level of excellence, and we’re excited to begin construction.”
The project, referred to as “A Brighter TUS,” will use under-utilized space in the ticketing lobby for expanding security. The expanded security checkpoint will use windows to open up the area and allow for more natural light and airfield views.
The spaces in the concourses that are being used for checkpoints currently will be redesigned to become retail shops, food and beverage locations and other services like business centers and children’s play areas.
A majority of the project’s funding will come from the Federal Aviation Administration’s passenger facility charge program. The rest will come from TAA.
Phase 1 will take place from June 2016 to October 2017 with construction in the central terminal area. This phase will focus on creating space for the new concessions. Phase 2 will overlapped with the first phase, taking place from June 2016 to August 2017. The second phase includes the relocation of the security checkpoints.
New concessions aren’t expected to open until completion of construction. Retail is expected in December 2017 while food and beverage location openings are slated for January 2018.
