Changes are coming to the International Arrivals Building at Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International (SJC).
The phased project will add 5,600 square feet to the facility, which is 14 years-old. A second baggage carousel will be added and the waiting area will be enclosed. The project is scheduled to be completed in spring 2017.
As part of the upgrades, 2,700 square feet of baggage claim space will be added. The front of the building will be extended by 2,900 square feet and will be enclosed, which will allow passengers to meet family and friends in a climate-controlled environment. Additionally, seating, restrooms and a snack space will be added in the new waiting area.
Beyond structural improvements, SJC will also be adding technical elements to the facility. The Mobile Passport Control app and Global Entry will operate in the airport, both in an effort to expedite travelers’ passage through U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
“Upgrading the International Arrivals Building is another example of our focus on continuous improvement to offer a world-class experience for our growing numbers of international travelers,” says Kim Becker, director of aviation for SJC. “Our high-touch and high-tech improvements in the facility will offer a warm and inviting experience for both travelers and those welcoming them to Silicon Valley.”
The project will cost $8.2 million, with funding coming from unspent bond proceeds. The general contractor on the project is Rodan Builders.
