SJC Opens International Arrivals Building Expansion

Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International (SJC) has opened its newly expanded International Arrivals Building. The $8.2 million project was added to accommodate the increase in international service at SJC, with the number of airlines offering international service having grown from three to nine.

The expansion has added 2,700 square feet of space to the building and a second baggage carousel in the secure U.S. Customs & Border Protection area. Additionally, a 3,085-square-foot enclosed, temperature-controlled waiting area has been added so friends and family waiting for arriving passengers won’t have to do so outside.

“This is a great day for SJC and our passengers,” said Kim Becker, director of aviation for SJC. “Having just come through the wettest winter in years, we’re thrilled that we can now bring friends and family in from out of the rain while they wait to welcome arriving international passengers.” She said SJC’s exponential growth in international service over the past couple years was a great motivator to get the project done.

Construction began in May 2016, with most of the work being done at night while passengers weren’t in the facility. The only remaining step in the project is the completion of construction of new restrooms in the waiting area.
