Delta, LAWA Kick Off $1.8 Billion Modernization Of Terminals 2, 3

Delta Air Lines and Los Angeles World Airports have formally started the Delta Sky Way at LAX project, which involves a $1.86 billion plan to modernize, upgrade and connect Terminal 2, Terminal 3 and the Tom Bradley International Terminal at Los Angeles International (LAX).

Construction is slated to start this fall.

The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners recently approved the project, which cleared the way for starting the largest tenant improvement award in its history.

Mayor Eric Garcetti, Delta CEO Ed Bastian, City Councilmember Mike Bonin, Board President Sean Burton and LAWA CEO Deborah Flint were among the airport and civic leaders attending a press gathering Thursday, where renderings and plans were shared.

“The modernization of Terminals 2 and 3 is an investment in our economy and people, and Delta’s partnership is helping to accelerate an era of growth and innovation in Los Angeles,” Garcetti says.

Bastian says LAX is one of the airline’s most important hubs. Delta operates more than 170 flights daily from LAX, and the airport connects more of its passengers to partner airlines than any other airport in the U.S.

“The Delta Sky Way at LAX project is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in and transform the airport experience in partnership with LAWA and the city of Los Angeles,” says Bastian, adding that the airline has committed to investing more than $12 billion in infrastructure projects over the next few years.

As part of the project, the two terminals will share a “headhouse.” The completed facility will offer more security screening capacity with automated security lines, more gate-area seating, world-class concessions in partnership with Westfield Corp., and other amenities. Features will include:

  • A 27-gate complex on Terminals 2 and 3 with a secure connection to the Tom Bradley International Terminal
  • A new headhouse and centralized lobby, checkpoint and baggage claim
  • A bridge connecting the three terminals on the secure side, as well as dedicated baggage recheck and security checkpoint for connecting of international-to-domestic transfers
  • A premium retail and dining setup
  • More power at gates
  • Modern signage

“Our vision is a gold-standard airport and one of our strategic plan goals is delivering exceptional facilities and experiences at the same time,” Flint says. “And even though that is no easy feat, I am confident that with the team at Delta and the partnership we have, that we can achieve that vision.”
