MIA Installs 3D Explosives Detection Scanner

The Miami-Dade Aviation Department announced today that the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) checkpoint at the Miami International Airport (MIA) is now using a new 3D computed tomography (CT) scanner that can detect explosives and other prohibited items that can hide in carry-on bags. Now occupying one of the lanes at the security checkpoint, the scanner is the first of its kind at MIA and among the first units in action at U.S. airports.

The system creates a 3D image of scanned items that can be viewed and rotated for inspection by a TSA officer. With this new technology that mimics the existing CT systems used for checked luggage, fewer bags will need to be opened and physically inspected, as TSA agents are able to do most visual analyses using the machine-generated image.
