SAT Launches Augmented Reality Exhibit

San Antonio International Airport (SAT) has a new way for passengers to learn about the city’s past with an interactive 3D exhibit. The “Experience History: Alamo Edition” is now a part of the airport’s Cultural Exhibit series. Visitors will be able to experience the Alamo’s iconic stories as soon as they enter the airport by downloading a free augmented reality app, pointing the camera of their mobile device at the life-size trading cards and watching the figures come to life.

“We are using innovative technology to entertain and enhance the traveler’s experience at the airport,” says Matt Evans, the arts, music and culture manager for the San Antonio Airport System.

Seven augmented reality exhibits have been installed at the airport to give visitors a chance to engage with some of the most famous figures from the Battle of the Alamo, including Alamo defenders Davy Crockett, Jim Bowie, William Travis, and the “mystery woman” of the Alamo, Sarah.

“We are at the forefront of creating how history is shared for future generations”, says Michael McGar, president of QuatumERA, the San Antonio-based technology company that created the mixed reality experience. “Utilizing technology to bring history to life is especially important in capturing the attention of younger audiences and appealing to diverse learning styles.”

The exhibits are on display in both of the airport’s terminals.
