SFO Will Phase Out Fossil-Based Jet Fuel

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) announced that it has joined more two dozen aviation companies around the world backing a bold new aviation transition strategy that envisions a complete phase out of fossil jet fuel to get the aviation industry to net-zero emissions by 2050.

The new strategy, drafted by the Mission Possible Partnership (MPP), calls for fossil jet fuel to be completely replaced by Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAFs) along with new hydrogen and battery-electric propulsion aircraft by this timeline.

The partnership articulates ten critical insights to achieve net-zero aviation by 2050, primarily the ramp-up of sustainable jet fuel production and use. Signatories include Airbus, fuel producer Neste, major airlines including United Airlines, Delta, and KLM, and international airports such London-Heathrow Airport (LHR). SFO was the only U.S. airport to sign on directly.

“Setting a goal for net-zero aviation can only be achieved through the engaged participation of airports, fuel suppliers, aircraft manufacturers, and airlines,” said SFO Airport Director Ivar Satero. “As the leading U.S. airport for the use of sustainable aviation fuel, we are proud to be a part of the most ambitious commitment this industry has ever made for our planet.”
