SAT Inks Deal For Gate Expansion Project

satThe San Antonio City Council approved an ordinance enabling San Antonio International Airport (SAT) to negotiate and execute a design-build services contract for a new ground load facility to support additional gates. The contract with Hensel Phelps Construction for the ground load facility in Terminal A will enable follow-up construction for additional domestic and international gates to support SAT’s growing air service needs.

“We’re excited to get started on the GLF,” said Jesus Saenz, director of airports, San Antonio Airport System, which oversees the airport. “This is a greatly needed step in our expansion.”

Construction on enabling projects will begin this summer and work on the ground load itself is slated to start in early 2024, with a completion date of March 2025.

The city council also approved a two-year funding agreement for modernization upgrades to the lower-level controls for the baggage handling system, replacing aging infrastructure. Last year, SAT completed work on modernizing the upper-level baggage handling operations.
