The Federal Aviation Administration announced about $92 million in projects for U.S. airport for a variety of sustainability initiatives, including solar panels, electric buses, charging stations and electrification studies.
Of the total funding, slightly less than $47 million will go to key U.S. airport solar projects. That will include $22.58 million to Indianapolis International Airport (IND) for energy efficient infrastructure and solar panels, $20 million to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport (PHX) for construct solar parking structures and $3 million El Paso International Airport (ELP) for solar panels.
Southeast Iowa Regional, La Porte Municipal, Centreville (IA) Municipal, and Decorah Municipal airports will also receive funds for solar panels.
“We need to help airports transition their operations as quickly as possible to renewable power,” said Shannetta Griffin, FAA associate administrator for airports. “Our investments keep us on track for the net-zero goal.”
An additional $44.5 million was also provided for electric vehicles and transportation infrastructure. That includes $16 million to Portland International Airport (PDX), $4.8 million to Harry Reid International Airport (LAS), $3.4 million to Raleigh-Durham International Airport (RDU), $3.1 million to Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC), $5.1 million to San Francisco International Airport (SFO), $3 million to Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT), $1.5 million to Kansas City International Airport (MCI) and $1.1 to San Diego International Airport (SAN).
