Vancouver International Airport (YVR) has created a new Energy Advisory Council. The council, part of YVR’s Roadmap to Net Zero initiative, will produce a report outlining the actions necessary for the airport to achieve net zero carbon by 2050.
Bob Elton, former president and CEO of BC Hydro, will serve as the council’s chair. Prior to his appointment, Elton served in various leadership roles at Price Waterhouse and Vancity Savings Credit Union; as an adjunct professor at the University of British Columbia Sauder School of Business and as a member of the Canada Electricity Advisory Council. Joining Elton will be Christoph Frei of Emerald technology Ventures; Brad Griffin, director of Simon Fraser University’s Canadian Energy and Emissions Data Centre (CEEDC) and the Energy and Materials Research Group (EMRG); Claudia Salem, an independent fintech, insuretech and cleantech advisor; Frans Tjallingii, co-founder and CEO of Montreal-based EV fleet management company 7Gen and venture capitalist Wal van Lierop, who founded global cleantech innovator Chrysalix Energy Ventures.
“We have a unique opportunity to chart a sustainable path forward not only for our airport, but also for our industry and region through our work with YVR’s Energy Advisory Council,” said YVR president and CEO Tamara Vrooman of the appointments. “As we explore climate solutions, the Council will provide us with expert advice, and identify partnerships to advance our energy transition. I’m confident the Council will expand our thinking and support YVR’s vision to meet energy needs sustainably for the next four to five decades and beyond.”
