Vancouver International Airport (YVR) will pilot new self-driving robotic pods designed to accommodate passengers who may need assistance getting around the airport. Developed by Vancouver-based firm A&K Robotics, the autonomous pods use real-time intelligent mapping software allowing passengers to independently navigate YVR’s sprawling campus to find shops, restaurants, accessible restrooms and their gate. YVR plans to begin product trials with employees, members of the accessibility community and travelers in fall 2024, officials said, adding that they hoped to add additional accessibility measures to the airport, which stands as the largest building in British Columbia.
“The new self-driving pods made by A&K Robotics represent an important step forward for accessibility at YVR, helping ensure people of all ages and abilities can independently navigate our terminals,” said Tamara Vrooman, YVR president and CEO . “Through our role as the first Testbed under the Integrated Marketplace, we are supporting the development and implementation of made-in-B.C. solutions that benefit YVR and our community as well as local businesses. We look forward to having this new technology available for travellers as early as next year.”
