San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has begun work on its Terminal 3 West Modernization project. The $2.6-billion renovation will retrofit the existing 650,000-square-foot western half of its current terminal, expand the airport’s check-in, bag drop and security checkpoint, and create 200,000 square feet of additional space for passenger amenities, concessions and retail concepts. Updates also include a new Federal Inspection Service (FIS) sterile connector to SFO’s Customs Hall and a new, six-story building dedicated to airline lounges and operational administrative space. The Terminal 3 West Modernization Project, which is targeting a LEED Platinum certification, is also adding several sustainability measures to the airport, including daylight harvesting, displacement ventilation, on-site photovoltaic cells, waste heat recovery, low carbon steel and concrete, energy smart baggage handling, dynamic glazing, recycled water, hydration stations, health-friendly materials and green building education.
The updated terminal project is anticipated to employ between 500 to 600 workers and plans to award over $173 million in contracts to Local Business Enterprises (LBE). The project, which will open in three phases, will be designed and built by Gensler, TEF Design and Turner Construction Company, with construction management by WCME JV: PGH Wong Engineering, Inc., Consor Engineers, MCK Americas, Inc. and ECS Consultants. The western half of the terminal is expected to open by fall 2027, while the new lounge and administrative building will open in early 2028 and the renovated check-in area will open in early 2029.
