Gerald R. Ford International Airport (GRR) has opened a new space designed to support travelers with sensory sensitivities. GRR’s Sensory Room was created in partnership with nonprofit Disability Advocates of Kent County and HKS, Inc. architects and was built by contractor The Christman Company. The space features an activity wall, soft surface play area and campfire sitting area to provide travelers with rooms suited for transition, active engagement and respite. The Sensory Room also features an airplane simulation zone donated by Delta Air Lines and Aero Bridge Works Inc. that allows travelers to practice boarding and finding their seats.
“We are pleased to continue our commitment to enhancing the airport experience for all travelers,” said Tory Richardson, president and CEO of the Ford International Airport Authority. “This room includes sensory aids that stimulate reactions, encourage communication, and reduce agitation and anxiety sometimes caused by air travel.”
