George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) has officially opened its new Terminal D-West Pier. The D-West Pier project began construction in November 2019 and is part of the airport’s $1.458 billion IAH Terminal Redevelopment Program (ITRP). The 160,000-square-foot expansion includes six new gates, updated passenger amenities as well as a 380-foort LED feature wall. The pier also features sixteen new dining and retail concepts (operated respectively by SSP America and Paradies Lagardère), including local brands contemporary eatery The Kitchen, Texas fare-focused restaurant The Annie and Houston Supply Co. as well as national brands Einstein Bros. Bagels, Jamba Juice, and the LEGO Store. IAH plans to open an iShoppes duty-free store, Popeye’s Louisiana Kitchen and Be Relax spa in November and local brand Velvet Taco in 2025.
“The Terminal D-West Pier is a game-changer,” said Jim Szczesniak, director of aviation for Houston Airports. “It truly is a world-class facility, and it not only enhances the travel experience but positions Bush Airport for continued growth. Constructing this during live airport operations, amid record passenger travel, was a remarkable feat.”
“This new Terminal D-West Pier is more than just an addition—it’s a statement about Houston’s commitment to growth and innovation,” added Houston Mayor John Whitmire. “It boosts our economy by creating jobs, but it also reminds us that we must continue modernizing all our airport infrastructure to meet the high standard this pier has set.”
The next phase of the ITRP to open will be the airport’s International Central Processor (ICP). The ICP, which will feature expanded ticketing, baggage claim and security checkpoint facilities, is scheduled to open in 2025.
