ABE Plans $22 Million Terminal Overhaul

After several years of strong passenger growth at Lehigh Valley International Airport (ABE), the Lehigh-Northampton Airport Authority is moving forward with a $22 million terminal overhaul that will expand security and improve passenger flow at the airport.

When completed in 2022, the infrastructure upgrade will add two new TSA processing lanes, increasing the total number of security checkpoints to four, and improve vertical circulation between the airport’s two levels for both inbound and outbound passengers.

“With passenger growth happening faster than our forecasts, we must address these essential infrastructure improvements with a heightened priority,” says Thomas Stoudt, executive director for the airport authority. “It’s safe to say that this is still in the early stages as we continue identifying funding sources for this major capital investment while refining the overall building program with the Board of Governors.”

ABE, which served approximately 800,000 passengers in 2018, has seen monthly traffic numbers continue to rise this year, in large part due to carrier Allegiant Airlines increasing the number of flights to and from the eastern Pennsylvania airport.
