ACI World Releases 2024-2053 Global Airport Traffic Forecasts

Airports Council International (ACI) World has released new airport traffic forecasts through 2053, projecting long-term growth in global passenger traffic. ACI’s report, which covers 99.8% of global markets across 161 countries and employs a forecasting methodology using advanced machine-learning techniques, predicts that between 2024 and 2043 global passenger traffic is projected to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 3.4%, reaching 17.7 billion passengers, and that between 2024 and 2053 traffic will grow at a CAGR of 3% and reach 22.3 billion passengers. The report adds that international traffic is expected to grow at a CAGR of 3.3% between 2024 and 2053 while domestic traffic will grow at a pace of 2.8%. Global air cargo is expected to grow at a CAGR of 2.7% from 2024 to 2043 and at a CAGR of 2.4% between 2024 and 2053, though the report cautions that supply chain disruptions, geopolitical tensions and changing global trade policies could alter these results. Aircraft movement is also expected to increase, reaching 149 million by 2043 and 176 million by 2053. The report also stresses that predicted growth attributed to a growing middle class and demand for air travel will best be supported by investments in airport infrastructure

“Despite the challenges in the near term, global air travel is poised for steady, sustained growth,” said ACI World Director General Justin Erbacci. “It is crucial for airports, airlines, and policymakers to take bold, forward-thinking action to anticipate and meet the demands of the future. ACI World remains unwavering in its commitment to support its airport members, helping them navigate evolving dynamics and seize opportunities ahead.”
