Airport concessionaire Areas says it will phase out single-use plastic straws at all company-operated concepts in the United States by the end of Q1 2019. The move will result in a reduction of slightly less than one million single-use plastic straws each month.
“We need to care for the future of our communities,” Bill Casey, COO of Areas in the United States, says in a statement announcing the decision. “Our focus is on helping ensure we support a sustainable environment.”
Areas says the step is part of a new service culture to help support sustainability initiatives that also includes providing straws only when requested.
