ATL Reveals $6 Billion Expansion Plan

A domestic terminal modernization, a new concourse, several parking improvements, a hotel and other expansions and improvements were unveiled Thursday as Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International (ATL) outlined its $6 billion, 20-year capital plan.

The details were revealed by ATL general manager Miguel Southwell and Atlanta Mayor Kasim Reed at the city’s inaugural State of the Airport luncheon.

The capital plan is dubbed ATLNext and is billed as ensuring ATL maintains its position as “one of the most important” airports in the world. Southwell noted the growth the airport has experienced recently but also pushed for new air service to China, India and other countries with fast-growing economies. He also urged airlines to restore service to Israel.

“We have had tremendous growth over the last year, and with our new capital plan, the next 20 years are only going to be more impressive,” Southwell said. “Not only will these projects be transformational for the airport, but they will enable the needed expansion to accommodate the growing demand we have at Hartsfield-Jackson.”

One of the first projects to get underway will be the terminal modernization, focusing on the Domestic Terminal atrium and the exterior of the facility. That project starts this month and runs through 2018. It is expected to cost $393 million. A $500 million hotel, travel plaza and mixed-used commercial complex is also slated to be completed in 2018.

Other airport terminal changes include a $200 million Concourse T extension running from 2016 through 2021; a Plane Train people mover turnback relocation, an 11 year project beginning this year and expected to cost $307 million; a new $983 million Concourse G, with construction starting this year and completion slated for 2023; and a $50 million Concourse D gate area expansion scheduled for 2019-2025.

ATL is also planning nearly $925 million in parking improvements with the most extensive projects – teardown and replacement of both the South and North garages – slated to begin in the 2020s. The ATLNext project also includes several airfield, cargo and support facilities projects.
