AUS Selects Gensler To Design Airport Expansion

The city of Austin has selected global design firm Gensler to be the designer and architect on the east terminal gate expansion at Austin-Bergstrom International (AUS).

The terminal work will add approximately 70,000 square feet, a 23 percent increase, in size and will include lobby renovations, infrastructure improvements, security enhancements, new business-center space, concessions, restroom facilities and concourse circulation.

“We are happy to have this opportunity to enhance the Austin airport,” says Todd Runkle, managing director of Gensler’s Austin office. “Our firm has been doing exciting work in airports across the globe and we hope to bring some of those cutting-edge ideas to our work here in Austin.”

The expansion will accommodate seven to eight additional aircraft parking spaces on the apron that are capable of handling domestic and international airline operations. It also will allow AUS to handle up to 15 million passengers, up nearly 30 percent from the current capacity.

Gensler has worked with AUS for many years, including acting as the associate architect on the 1999 construction of the Barbara Jordan Terminal.
