Airport Experience News has selected Jesus Saenz, director of airports for the city of San Antonio, as its Director of the Year, Medium Airports Division. Saenz oversees the day to day operations at both San Antonio International Airport (SAT) and Stinson Municipal Airport (SSF).
Saenz was appointed in January 2020, just ahead of the pandemic that upended air travel for several months. Prior to taking the helm at SAT, Saenz held several positions within the Houston Airport System, most recently as chief operating officer. In his nearly five years at SAT, Saenz has led the airport through the pandemic and into a new phase of growth. He is also overseeing a massive capital program that will include a new terminal as well as renovation of an existing terminal and other related projects.

Montes, vice president and publisher of Airport Experience News. “Under his leadership, SAT has reached record passenger levels and has embarked on an ambitious capital program that will facilitate further growth in the coming years.” Saenz is also an at-large representative on the U.S. Policy Council for Airports Council International – North America and serves on the policy review committee for the American Association of Airport Executives.

Saenz is the second of three directors of the year to be named by AXN for 2024. Last week, AXN announced the selection of Kelly Campbell, executive director of aviation at Lubbock Preston Smith International Airport (LBB),as the Director of the Year, Small Airports Division. The selection for large airport category will be revealed in the coming weeks. All will be featured in a special Leadership Issue of Airport Experience News and will be honored at the 2025 Airport Experience Conference.
