After 34 years at Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International Airport (BHM), President and CEO Alfonso Denson will retire during the first quarter of 2018. The Birmingham Airport Authority says is beginning the search for a new CEO and is committed to a seamless transition.
Denson has spent the past 17 years leading BHM. Recent accomplishments include increasing the length of a key runway, expanding cargo activity and acquiring nearly 800 properties through the airport’s noise and environmental land acquisition program. He also led the airport’s terminal modernization program from 2011 through 2014.
Denson says his success is due to having a clear vision of how to implement projects of all types and sizes, and most importantly, nurturing and fostering excellent relationships with all airport stakeholders, including the airlines, the Transportation Security Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration.
BHM served 2.65 million passengers in 2016, a decline of 1.4 percent. Passenger numbers declined the previous two years as well but have improved considerably in recent months.
