BHM Gets LEED Gold For New Construction

Birmingham-Shuttlesworth International (BHM) has achieved LEED Gold status for New Construction based on its incorporation of various sustainability strategies and features.

“This LEED certification is yet another positive component of the $201 million Terminal Modernization Project,” says Alfonso Denson, Birmingham Airport Authority president and CEO. “Congratulations to everyone associated with the project.”

BHM received the certification for energy use, lighting innovation, water conservation and material use. The following features led to the Gold certification:

  • Natural daylight was utilized to decrease the need for artificial lighting.
  • Energy modeling was done throughout the design process to evaluate consumption of energy.
  • High-efficiency light fixtures were installed to lower energy consumption.
  • Almost 45 percent of building materials were extracted, harvested, recovered or manufactured within 500 miles of the site.
  • Rainwater harvesting was utilized.
  • High-efficiency thermal building envelope and solar water heating were used at public restroom clusters.
  • Almost 23 percent of total building materials were manufactured using recycled materials.
  • Waste management practices were used throughout the project to avoid pollution.
