Board OKs Partial Budget For BOS Terminal Renovations

The Massachusetts Port Authority Board has approved a partial budget of $20M for renovations and improvements to Terminals B, C and E at Boston Logan International (BOS).

The project will give a new home to United Airlines in Terminal B, allow jetBlue to continue to grow in Terminal C and provide enhanced customer service with post-security connections between the two sides of Terminal B and between Terminals C and E.

“The consolidation of the airline industry as the number of mergers has accelerated in recent years has also necessitated the physical consolidation of airports themselves in order to accommodate these new alliances in a single terminal and to allow passengers to more easily and conveniently connect between flights,” says David S. Mackey, interim CEO and executive director of Massport. “When this phase of the work is done within the next two years, United Airlines will have new gates in Terminal B and passengers will be able to go from the US Airways side of Terminal B to the United and American side without having to go through security twice. Similarly, there will be a post-security connection between Terminal E and Terminal C.”

The board approved a partial budget to be used to fund demolition, procure pre-construction Construction Manager at Risk services and continue design. The port authority will return to the board later this year for additional funding and a final design for the project.

The project will be designed to meet Massport’s Sustainable Design Standards, which include waste reduction and recycling, LED lighting and improved roofing and skins for energy efficiencies, use of regional materials and “Certified” wood. It is expected to generate more than 60 construction and design jobs over 18 months.

The project will also include new ticket counter positions, renovated security checkpoints with additional lanes, concessions space and baggage-handling systems.
