The Los Angeles Board of Airport Commissioners has awarded a seven-year contract to Boingo Wireless Inc. to upgrade, manage, operate and market Los Angeles International’s (LAX) Wi-Fi network.
Travelers still will receive 45 minutes of free, advertising-supported Wi-Fi services. The difference will be in speed: The Wi-Fi will work up to four times faster than it does now, which would place LAX in the top five airports in the U.S. in that respect.
“Our new Wi-Fi agreement and planned upgrades will keep LAX on the cutting edge of wireless technologies and ensure that we’re offering our guests access to one of the fastest airport wireless networks in the nation,” says Los Angeles World Airports Executive Director Gina Marie Lindsey. “Today, we provide free Wi-Fi access to more than 1 million travelers each month. We look forward to ensuring that all guests have unlimited free access to our state-of-the-art network.”
Boingo will upgrade existing networks to enable a tiered Wi-Fi setup, with speeds ranging from five megabits per second to 20. Tiers at varying speed levels will be available for free. However, travelers also will be able to pay for premium tiers that don’t have advertisements.
“Los Angeles World Airports has an unwavering commitment to exceptional customer service and technological innovation,” says Nick Hulse, president of Boingo Wireless. “LAX is the gateway to Silicon Beach, and we’re proud to deliver one of the fastest airport Wi-Fi networks in the country.”
