Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI) is hosting “Speak Truth to Power,” a photography exhibition from the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Justice and Human Rights.
“My father once said that ‘those with the courage to enter the moral conflict will find themselves with companions in every corner of the world,'” says Kathleen Kennedy Townsend, RFK Center board member. “Through this exhibition, we ensure that these courageous human rights defenders will find companions in Baltimore and beyond.”
The collection includes photographs by the late Pulitzer Prize-winning photojournalist Eddie Adams. Images document courage by featuring human rights defenders worldwide, and the exhibit examines those rights by focusing on issues such as nuclear disarmament, children in war, environmental activism and religious self-determination. The exhibit has been shown in more than 20 cities around the world; support from Constellation Energy helped bring it to BWI, where it will be through May 31.
“We are proud to display these stirring, challenging photographs,” says Paul J. Wiedefeld, the airport’s executive director. “In recent years, we have presented many diverse examples of high-quality artwork here at BWI Marshall. This exhibition continues our commitment to provide a positive, memorable travel experience for our customers.”
“Speak Truth to Power” is based on a book written by human rights activist and the center’s president, Kerry Kennedy; there is also a play, “Speak Truth to Power, Voices from Beyond the Dark,” by playwright Ariel Dorfman. The “Speak Truth to Power” education curriculum has been taught to students in countries worldwide, including the United States, Italy, Romania, Cambodia and South Africa. Each student is given a tool kit for action to create change in the classroom, the community, the country and the world.
