Baltimore/Washington International Thurgood Marshall (BWI) tops the charts this year with healthy food offerings at 92 percent of its restaurants, according to an annual study conducted by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.
BWI had ranked fourth in 2013.
This is the 14th year the committee has surveyed the 30 busiest U.S. airports. Its report this year found that 75 percent of restaurants at
23 of those 30 venues offer at least one healthful plant-based entree. Meals that meet the standard are plant-based and feature vegetables, fruits, whole grains and legumes.The report indicated that BWI travelers can go to Airspace Lounge for a vegetable and hummus plate or Silver Diner for gluten-free quinoa pasta, Santa Fe roasted vegetables or the warm roasted veggie salad which includes 10 locally sourced vegetables.
BWI and Newark Liberty International (EWR) tied for most improved, both increasing their healthy offering percentages by 12 points. Last year’s top finisher, Denver International (DEN) finished seventh, dropping 3 percentage points but still producing healthy offerings at 83 percent of its restaurants. The overall performance of the top 10 scoring airports improved by 8 percentage points, with Boston Logan International (BOS) scoring a 79 percent ranking compared with Miami International (MIA) and Orlando International (MCO) scoring 71 percent rankings in 2013.
