Charlotte Douglas International Airport (CLT) will unveil the next phase of its Destination CLT project on September 17. The $241 million Phase II of the Concourse A Expansion, designed by Perkins+Will and C Design and constructed by joint venture JE Dunn and McFarland, adds 200,000 square feet north of the existing concourse and 10 new gates, including seven gates for Delta Air Lines, two slated for Frontier Airlines and one common-use gate.
Phase II also features similar customer-facing and sustainability upgrades to the project’s Phase I improvements, including auto-tinting window glass, new charging features, water-saving restroom fixtures and a private Mother’s Room for nursing. The new terminal space also highlights several local art installations and educational displays in homage to North Carolina’s aviation legacy, including an immersive Wright Brothers’ “First in Flight” light and sound wall; a life-sized DC-9-82 T-Tail aircraft embedded in the floor near Gate A31 and a 950-square-foot mural “Where Earth Meets Sky” by artist Val Britton.
New concessions include a third Dunkin’ location, the Great Wagon Road Distillery (formerly known as Broken Spoke) and all-day fare from Crown Diner, all operated by HMSHost by Avolta, as well the Market Place, a snack and travel essentials store operated by Charlotte-based DBE concessionaire SB&J Enterprises. Delta Air Lines is also expected to open a 15,000-square foot Sky Club by the end of 2024.
“The opening of Concourse A Expansion – Phase II marks a significant milestone for CLT and the Destination CLT program,” said CLT CEO Haley Gentry. “This addition not only represents growth, but a dedication to enhancing the overall travel experience. The 10 new gates, unique dining options, artistic touches and cutting-edge innovation reflect a significant investment in our infrastructure and serves as a testament to our vision for building an airport for the future.”
