Construction Begins On MSP’s Multi-Phase Improvement Project

The Metropolitan Airports Commission started construction this week on the transformation of its ticket lobby and baggage claim levels in Terminal 1-Lindbergh at Minneapolis-St. Paul International (MSP).

The project will proceed in phases over the next five years. Starting now and continuing through September, workers will install utilities for new escalators and elevators. Eventually all current escalators and elevators connecting the floors at the front of the terminal will be taken out and replaced by a central bank of escalators and elevators on both ends of the building.

“The streamlined, modern design will accommodate the growing number of travelers using the facility and support increased use of technology to process travelers and their bags,” says Brian Ryks, executive director and CEO for the MAC. “It will reduce congestion in the ticket lobby, provide better sightlines and bring more daylight into the space.”

After the escalators and elevators are in place, the project will continue with ticketing and bag claim levels. Various upgrades will take place on the floors, ticket kiosks, counters, baggage claim carousels, restrooms and dining options.
