The Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation is benefiting from some slick moves at Halifax International (YHZ).
Employees, friends and family spent months preparing for a flash mob that performed Sept. 16 in the airport’s main lobby to raise money for the cancer organization. So far, it has raised more than $7,800 for breast cancer research, and the fundraising challenge has been extended to other airports.
The dancing, which was filmed in a YouTube video, was recently featured on CNN’s “Viral Video Rewinds.”
“The response we’ve received has been overwhelming,” says Marlene More, a Halifax International Airport Authority employee who took the lead in organizing this initiative. “We had no idea this video would reach people as far away as Afghanistan, Australia and Africa. To know that we’ve brought awareness all over the world and possibly inspired others to step up and support breast cancer research is quite empowering,” she says.
Community members including airport authority employees, airline staff, Canadian Air Transport Security Authority employees, Tartan Team volunteers, RCMP officers, security staff and retail employees participated in the dance.
“We are enormously impressed by the airport community’s commitment to draw attention to breast cancer awareness, and to raise funds for the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Atlantic Region,” says Nancy Margeson, CEO of the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation – Atlantic Region. “The countless hours that they dedicated to organizing and rehearsing for the flash mob has really paid off. We are thrilled with the result, and with the recognition it is generating.”
