Daniel Elwell Becomes Acting Administrator of FAA

Federal Aviation Administration Deputy Administrator Daniel Elwell took over as the agency’s acting administrator on Jan. 7, 2018. He replaced former FAA Administrator Michael Huerta upon the completion of his term.

Before he was FAA deputy administrator, Elwell served as senior vice president for safety, security and operations at Airlines for America from 2013 to 2015. In this role he worked to increase safety and security measures for major U.S. carriers. Between 2008 and 2013 Elwell acted as vice president of Aerospace Industries Association. Elwell has been employed by the FAA in the past, functioning as the agency’s assistant administrator for policy, planning and environment from 2006 to 2008.

Prior to Elwell’s career in administration, Elwell led a decorated career as a pilot, first in the U.S. Air Force, where he achieved the rank of lieutenant colonel. After retiring from military service, Elwell flew for American Airlines for 16 years.

“Dan’s background as a military and commercial pilot and past leadership positions in the FAA and the aviation sector ensures a seamless transition to continue the important mission of the FAA,”  says U.S. Secretary of Transportation Elaine L. Chao.
