DEN Looks To Add More Gates, Sends Contracts To City Council

Denver International (DEN), which is in the midst of multiple projects, will ask the Denver City Council to approve contracts to build 39 new gates as part of the airport’s gate program. The project’s cost is projected to be around $1.53 billion.

The airport had not committed to a specific number of gates, but earlier estimates were 26 gates. According to Heath Montgomery, senior public information officer at DEN, the number of gates is based on airline requests and the airports record passenger growth in recent years.

“This would increase our standard gate capacity by about 36 percent, which is what we believe is needed to meet demand,” says Montgomery.

Additionally, the airport has sent four contracts to the Denver City Council for approval for the separate Great Hall Project, which is being led by Ferrovial Airports.

The four contracts are for architecture and design work. The contracts are five-year, $65 million contracts with both Jacobs Engineering Group Inc. and HNTB Corp. for architectural design and engineering services for gate expansion projects on Concourses A, B and C, including aircraft gates, hold rooms, a full basement, aircraft-rated pavement and other projects; a five-year, $655 million contract with Holder-FCI Joint Venture for pre-construction and construction management of the concourse gate expansion program; and a five-year, $700 million contract with Turner-Flatiron Joint Venture for pre-construction and construction management of the concourse gate expansion.

The contracts are on the agenda for the city council’s business, arts, workforce and aeronautical services committee meeting on Nov. 1.
