Denver Launches RMU, Kiosk Program

Denver International (DEN) has announced the opening of its Retail Merchandising Unit and Kiosk Program, managed by Provenzano Resources Inc.

The project, which has 38 locations, is expected to add $13M in concession revenue during its first year, an additional $500,000 in annual sales tax and nearly 200 jobs.

“DIA’s RMU program is important for Denver, the airport and the business community,” Aviation Manager Kim Day says. “This program provides an excellent opportunity for small businesses who have never retailed out of an airport before. Since the capital costs are relatively low and license agreements are flexible, it is a very low-risk method for a small local business to test their market to air passengers. At the same time, we benefit by providing unique retail goods for our passengers, in addition to the increased revenue which helps maintain the competitive rates we charge our airline partners. This is a win-win situation for everyone involved.”

Irene Pierpont, PRI’s director of special projects, says the airport program is a great opportunity for small businesses.

“Our primary goals for the program are to enhance the airport’s retail merchandise mix, create exciting visual displays, offer personal and outstanding customer service to the traveling public and exceed the financial and small business outreach goals established by airport management,” she says. “We are on our way to succeeding. Passengers can look forward to purchasing gifts and easy take-away items that travel well.”
