San Diego County Regional Airport Authority has signed a two-year agreement with Detecon Innovation Institute to refine and manage the airport’s Innovation Lab as a third-party operator. Deutsche Telekom, the parent company of Detecon Inc., also owns T-Mobile.
The experts at Detecon Innovation Institute are likely to focus the Innovation Lab on investigating environmental solutions, blockchain and artificial intelligence.
The Innovation Lab was established in 2015 with the goal of reducing barriers to entry for innovators wishing to break into the aviation industry. The Innovation Lab has also endeavored to develop new business methods and enhancements for the passenger experience.
Though innovations developed at the Innovation Lab will first be deployed at San Diego International Airport (SAN), successful technologies could subsequently be rolled out at airports and similar non-traditional markets.
“San Diego International Airport has long been an industry innovator,” says Kimberly J. Becker, president and CEO of the San Diego County Regional Airport Authority. “With the Innovation Lab we expect to address existing challenges, as well as develop new concepts that will result in a radically different airport experience.”
