International passengers arriving at Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County (DTW) have a shot of getting through Customs more quickly these days thanks to automated passport machines.
DTW teamed with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection and Delta Air Lines just over a month ago to install 30 new Automated Passport Control kiosks in the McNamara Terminal’s international arrivals and federal inspection services area.
Processing times for many arriving international passengers have already decreased by as much as 40 percent.
“These new APC machines help maintain the safety and security of our airport while improving efficiency,” says Tom Naughton, CEO of DTW. “With international passenger traffic increasing 23 percent the last five years at DTW, it is important that we stay ahead of the curve, and these new kiosks are a great example of how working together with our partners, we continue to improve our travelers’ airport experience here in Detroit.”
The self-service kiosks allow passengers to submit their declaration and biographic information electronically, reducing the time they spend with an officer from CBP. Those who use the machines no longer need to fill out paper declaration forms; the kiosk will give passengers a receipt they will provide, along with passports, to the CBP officer to finalize their inspection for entry into the U.S.
The BorderXpress system was developed and first implemented by the Vancouver Airport Authority.
