Einstein Bros. Bagels at San Diego International Airport (SAN) has been named the first “ocean-friendly” airport dining option under the new Surfrider Foundation’s Ocean Friendly Restaurant program.
Located in SAN Terminal 2 West and operated by Mission Yogurt, Einstein Bros. Bagels earned the certification by publicly pledging to both reduce their waste and boost environmental awareness about the alarming rise of garbage cluttering Earth’s waterways. The restaurant has vowed to provide reusable food ware for onsite dining, institute proper recycling practices, use only paper straws, not use Styrofoam and not provide plastic bags on take-away orders.
More environmentally sustainable practices are encouraged for participating Ocean Friendly Restaurants, which number more than 115 in the San Diego area alone, with hundreds more located in other parts of the U.S.
“This is a tremendous example of our concession partners leading by example, showcasing the extent and efforts being made at SAN to collaborate in the name of sustainability,” says Kimberly Becker, airport authority president and CEO. “We look forward to this being the tip of the iceberg, with more concession partners seeking certification as we all work toward making our airport and region a better place for future generations.”
