Emilio Gonzalez, director and CEO of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department has submitted his resignation to Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Gimenez. His resignation will be effective Feb. 1, 2018.
“I am extremely proud of all the incredible work Emilio has achieved in the four and a half years he has been a part of the Miami-Dade County family,” said Gimenez. “Under Emilio’s leadership Miami International Airport has welcomed more passengers than ever in its history; has become number one in the U.S. for total numbers of airlines; and number one for passenger and cargo flights to Latin America and the Caribbean, in addition to international cargo. He is a true and recognized leader in the U.S. aviation industry, and MIA has become an international point of reference for airports.”
Gimenez appointed Gonzalez in April 2013. During his tenure, Gonzalez has overseen operations at Miami International (MIA), as well as four general aviation airports. Together the airports generate $33.7 billion in business revenue and support more than 280,000 jobs.
Gonzalez also oversaw a $6.5 billion capital improvement program, which added new terminals, roadways and infrastructure to both MIA and the general aviation airports. Plus, he helped roll out a more advanced mobile application for MIA, including the addition of Mobile Passport Control, which allows international travelers to get through U.S. Customs and Border Protection faster.
“It has been my high honor to serve as director of the Miami-Dade Aviation Department over the last four and a half years,” says Gonzalez. “There is no higher professional calling than serving our fellow citizens, and I am thankful to have been able to lead the aviation department and Miami International Airport. During this period MIA has become an award-winning international economic powerhouse and global brand for both passenger and cargo services.”
Gonzalez further added: ““It has been a privilege to work with the outstanding professionals from the aviation department and my colleagues throughout Miami-Dade County government. I look forward to spending the holidays with my family before beginning the next chapter of my career.”
