Green Build Discovery Center Shows What’s To Come At SAN

Now that the Green Build Discovery Center at San Diego International (SAN) has opened, the public is able to view the airport improvements that are slated to be finished between the end of this year and the middle of next.

The Green Build will double the size of Terminal 2 West and bring 10 new aircraft gates, a dual-level roadway, new shops and restaurants, public art, expanded public spaces, enhanced security areas and airfield improvements to the airport. The airport authority is seeking Silver Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council, and thus has incorporated sustainable features throughout the project.

“We wanted a way to tell the public about these changes in a way that engages and educates them,” says Airport Authority Board Chair Robert Gleason in remarks at the Center’s opening Feb. 29. “We feel it’s important for San Diegans and those visiting our area to know about the positive impact of the Green Build on the San Diego region, its economic well-being and quality of life.”

The Discovery Center, which can be found in the pre-security area on the second floor of Terminal 2 West, uses informational panels, color renderings and video to explain the project and its benefits. The center itself was designed with sustainability features, including special inks, biodegradable materials and paste, and recycled paper products.

Visitors to the center through June 30 will be able to enter a drawing to win an electric Tommy Bahama® beach cruiser bicycle, which symbolizes the sustainable features of the project and is on display in the center.

The Discovery Center is open daily from 8 a.m. to 10 p.m.
