Halifax International Airport Authority is preparing to implement the next phase of its current 10-year capital plan to expand current services and enhance the passenger and visitor experience at Halifax Stanfield International (YHZ), The plans include a terminal expansion and new concessions offerings, among other projects.
“Halifax Stanfield is one of the most critical pieces of transportation infrastructure in Atlantic Canada,” says Joyce Carter, HIAA president and chief executive officer. “Over half of all the air passengers and air cargo that move in Atlantic Canada pass through our airport, creating a tremendously positive impact on Halifax and the entire province as an economic generator and growth enabler. It’s imperative that we continue to invest in and further advance this valuable community asset.”
The terminal building expansion will upgrade the passenger security screening and passenger processing functions, and will include new concessions, the Airport Authority said. Other projects include airfield developments and runway, taxiway and apron restoration, along with various smaller projects.
The plan will also focus on the upgrade of utility infrastructure, including power and sewer, expansion of vehicular parking infrastructure and services, central chiller plant replacement and information technology improvements.
YHZ’s Airport Improvement Fee will rise to help pay for the upcoming projects. Beginning next year, a fee of C$28 (US$21.57) will be added to airline tickets for originating at the airport. That represents an increase of C$3 (US$2.31). Funding for the projects will also come from reinvestment of operating profits and borrowing.
