John Hatanaka has been named executive director of Hollywood Burbank Airport (BUR), effective immediately. Hatanaka succeeds Frank Miller, who retired this month.
“John is poised to lead the airport into this new era of growth and innovation,” said Ara Najarian, president of the Burbank-Glendale-Pasadena Airport Authority. “We look forward to the leadership and vision he will bring to the role, ensuring continued excellence in service for travelers in the Los Angeles region.”
Hatanaka joined BUR in 2002 and most recently served as senior deputy executive director for the last 15 years. He has been in the aviation industry for more than 45 years, including 21 years with Japan Airlines and two years as an aviation consultant before arriving at BUR.
With a replacement passenger terminal project in the works, Hatanaka said he is laser-focused on ushering progress through to completion. “It’s an exciting time for Hollywood Burbank Airport,” he said. “The biggest challenge concerning our new terminal is getting the entire team – including airport staff, airlines, design team and construction crews – aligned in our vision to create the best possible passenger experience for future travelers.”
The facility is slated to open in October 2026 and will be in the northeast quadrant of Hollywood Burbank Airport, across the airfield from the current terminal. The 355,000-square-foot, 14- gate facility will replace the existing terminal to meet FAA standards and state building requirements.
